She rustled around, wondering where her brother’s glasses had gone. Their home was a total mess and they were never able to find any of their things. It was absolutely ridiculous. She picked up her pillow an threw it across the room aggressively, hearing the soft smack as the bean pillow hit the wall and fell to the floor while continuing to toss things over her shoulder in search of her brother’s glasses.
The twins lived in a studio apartment in lower Manhattan where many private bars and restaurants were opened, right next to the Hudson River. The large, ceiling-to-floor window revealed an amazing, sparkling view of the river in the early morning.
“John… I told you to hide this… Oh yeah, I found your glasses. One of the cats was hogging it,” she said, tossing the small sandwich bag and glasses at her brother as he left the bathroom.
“Sweetie, there’s no way can hide this stuff. They’ve got a stronger smell than a hobo’s armpit, man."
“Well then, get rid of it. I don’t even know why you keep that stuff if neither of us smokes it. Give it back to Jose or something.” She threw her brother’s T-shirt at him with one hand while pulling on her Jimmy Choos with the other.
John caught his shirt and pulled it on sloppily, readjusted his glasses on his nose when he was done. He walked over to his sister and wrapped his arms around her waist, setting his chin on her right shoulder. “You’re so mean to me. By the way, when are you going to get home tonight? I finally finished the model bridge. I want you to help me wrap it up before we go to the party tomorrow.”
“Why did you even make that thing? It’s not like they were the best people in the world to us. You waste so much time and effort on them.” She picked up the decapitated stuffed bunny from the floor and looked at it, sighing before putting it in her bag. Muttering to herself about fixing it and feeling like “kicking the damned cats.”
“Babe, they still took care of us. We should be grateful.”
“Yeah… whatever…”
John laughed and followed her around as she walked around the apartment, picking stuff up and dumping them into her bag, his arms still wrapped around her. He snickered as he tightened his arms around her, looking up at the clock. “Why do you always get ready so early in the morning?”
“I always take forever, that’s why.”
“How about you not go so early, just for today?”
“No.”
“But Alice...” John pouted, pursing his lips at his sister as he whined and clung onto her like a koala.
“No way. I always take forever and my boss is a pain in my ass. He’s going to kill me if I’m late.”
John just held onto her, wondering what he should do to make her stay. With a mischievous grin, he forced his sister around and picked her up, wrapping her legs around his waist. “I can make you stay.”
